The purpose of this is to show an illustration of a word problem that uses fractions to reduce to lowest terms. In a group of 16 sailors, 8 are Spartans. Write this as a fraction in lowest terms. |
If we don’t know what to do, we look at hint 1, which shows us an overall picture that the Spartans are look different than the rest of the sailors. We also learn what “lowest terms” mean, which is that only the whole number 1 will divide evenly into both the numerator and denominator. |
If we don’t know what that means, we look at hint 2, which shows us that if we counted all the sailors, we would have 16 with 8 out of 16 in the box. On the bottom we can see the picture of how 8 out of 16 is expressed as a fraction. |
In the next hint we start with the fraction 8 out of 16, and we find that 8 is the greatest common factor that divides evenly into both 8 and 16. |
When we look at the last hint, we can see in blue that 8/16 is the same as ½ by comparing the pictures. The advantage of Internet Math is that not only that it teaches how to reduce 8/16, but that it teaches the concepts of fractions and how to solve them. |
When I repeat, I see 12 sailors with 9 of them Spartans. |
In hint 1 I see the same focus on the overall problem and the focus on key words. |
In hint 2 I see that I have only 9 Spartans out of 16 sailors with its visual representation in blue. |
We go through the same process in hint 3. |
In hint 4 I see in pictures that 9/12 is really the same as ¾. |
